A Historic Monument Brings Light To The Heart of Paramaribo
Basilica of St. Peter & Paul's Cathedral | Paramaribo, Suriname
One of the most fascinating and sacred buildings in the heart of Paramaribo, Suriname lies South America's largest wooden structure - the Cathedral Basilica Saint Peter and Paul. It is the seat of the Catholic Diocese and holds centuries of history. A unique work of architecture, the Cathedral is Suriname's most historic monument.
Throughout the early 1800s, numbers started to grow in the Catholic community and a new building to facilitate the community was needed. Construction of the Cathedral started in 1885 and was completed in 1901. Its incredible interior is made of unpainted Surinamese cedarwood while its exterior was made from bruinhart wood. As decades passed by, the Cathedral became fragile, but the Cathedral gained back its strength after its restoration in 2014. Today, the Cathedral stands stronger and brighter than before
